By definition anything that claims to treat, prevent or cure a disease is a medicine; medicines must be licensed, a process that costs usually upwards of $500 million; but only man-made, thus patentable, substances can afford to get a licence. So, if a nutrient is proven to work it is classified a medicine, but no-one can afford to get a licence because there’s no patent and hence no way to protect profits, so the nutrient just vanishes.
