CURE Quote
Winnicott points out—to an audience of doctors and nurses—that the etymological root of “cure” can be found in “care.” The Oxford English Dictionary explains that “cure” derives originally from the Latin word, “cura,” meaning care, tracing its etymology through the French “cure,” which again translates as “care,” dating from the eleventh century. Over time, the two words have parted ways, and Winnicott describes the shift in meaning of “cure”—“the passage from care to remedy”—in terms of an impoverishment passage from care to remedy”—in terms of an impoverishment. Something has been lost in the movement from one meaning to another, he suggests; the meaning degenerates. “Cure, in the sense of remedy, successful eradication of disease and its cause, tends today to overlay cure as care,” he writes.
