It is useful to think of all illnesses as “non-adapted” states characterized by disability and distress. These states become regarded as illnesses (sb. disease) when the person or his family feels that he cannot cure himself and he turns to someone whom he knows to be an expert in the theory and treatment of his illness (sb. disease), as he defines it.
