CURE Quote
Level one consists of anecdotal reports which suggest hypotheses. Johnny has an illness which disappears after he is given some untested remedy. Did the remedy cure him? Many people might believe that it did. On the other hand, there are other explanations for Johnny’s improvement. The disease may have been self-limiting, so that Johnny would have become well even if he didn’t receive the remedy. Johnny’s illness may have responded to the ‘kindness’ of his physician, or Johnny may have been doing something else at the same time as he took the remedy which caused his illness to remit. There may even be adverse effects from the remedy in certain people which are unrecognized but which Johnny was fortunate to have avoided. Thus the mere coincidence of timing between introduction of the treatment and healing can do little more than suggest that the treatment may be of value.
