Many of the above treatments may have been believed to be specific for the cure of disease, rather than simply a treatment to ‘please’ the patient (using the very original definition of a placebo). In other words, the intention of the clinician may not have been to prescribe a placebo, as he or she may have believed that the treatment was a cure for a disease, even if a placebo was actually given.
