In 5 percent of patients, hypertension results from a known disease or condition such as chronic kidney disease (see discussion on the urinary system), endocrine gland dysfunction such as a pituitary or an adrenal tumor, or a hyperactive thyroid gland (see discussion on the endocrine glands). The high blood pressure associated with these conditions is called secondary hypertension because the cause of the hypertension is known. In many cases, successful treatment of the underlying condition cures the hypertension.
