Diagnoses are whimsical names, culturally determined, and have very little absolute meaning or power in and of themselves. It is not the diagnosis that kills (or cures), but the expectations and images accompanying it. It’s not what the patients are told that is so critical to health, it is how they’re told, how they are assisted in dealing with the diagnosis, and obviously how they choose to receive the message within the context of their own belief system.
