CURE Quote
The individual as the focus of disease and the ability of only the expert to diagnose and cure can be seen as central to the activities to be assumed by patient and doctor in enacting the sick role (Parsons, 1951). That is, both have duties to fulfil in restoring the patient to ‘normal’ functioning and able to resume their role within society. The role for the patient is essentially submissive in that s/he is required to seek and act upon medical advice. It is suggested here that, relative to other occupations, the authority of the doctor is high as sick people are obliged, in the interests of society, to seek medical advice (Johnson, 1972).
