The Dentist part 2 – Alice and Zizi discuss Fluoride

“Ok,” says Alice “I understand that we both have healthy teeth – according to our dentists – and I understand that we don’t know which of us has the healthiest teeth.  But what about fluoride, doesn’t it make our teeth healthier?”

“You use fluoride?” asked Zizi.

“Of course I do.  It’s in the water, it’s in the toothpaste and when I go to the dentist – it’s impossible to avoid fluoride.”

“I don’t use fluoride” Zizi responds. “I don’t believe it’s healthy. Continue reading

Alice and Zizi: A visit to the Dentist Part 1 – Whose Teeth are the Healthiest?

We’ve learned that Alice and Zizi are similar, and different.  Two friends, similar height and weight.  Alice gets more colds than Zizi, and they last longer.  Both get the flu every few years.  Neither has any ‘medical’ problems.

Who has the healthiest teeth, Alice or Zizi?

You might talk to their dentists – not that it will help. Alice’s dentist tells her that her teeth are strong and healthy.  Zizi’s dentist reports the same. But whose teeth and gums are healthiest? Continue reading

Food Guides See No Evil – Dr Yoni Freedhoff

Yesterday I attended and enjoyed a lecture at the University of Alberta by Dr Yoni Freedhoff of the University of Ottawa.  Dr. Freedhoff discussed the Canada Food Guide, and “How Omission, Commission and Downright Stupidity Shaped Canada’s Food Guide“.  From  what I have seen, Dr Freedhoff’s comments will apply equally well to the USA equivalent  the ‘Food Plate’.

I come to presentations like this with a completely different perspective.  That is to say, the government has their perspective, Dr Freedhoff has the same perspective – he spends his time arguing the facts. My perspective is very different. In simplest terms, I take a ‘healthicine’ perspective, while the government and Dr Freedhoff take a disease, or an illness perspective.  Let me explain. Zizi Gets a Cold, Or Not?

“Damn,” exclaimed Zizi, “My nose feels like someone is stabbing me.  I’m getting a cold.   I hate that, there’s nothing I can do. And to top it off, the weekend is coming – I’d rather have my cold during the work week.”

“Hmm…” said Alice, “I usually get a tickle, or a burning feeling in my throat before a cold.  Sounds like you have a sinus infection, not a cold.”

“A cold, a sinus infection, what’s the difference.  I’m going to be sick. I hate it when one nostril plugs up and the other one leaks all the time.  It’s so counter-intuitive. I hate being sick – I wish I could be healthy all the time!”

“You are very healthy,” Alice replied.  “You hardly every get colds or flu.  That’s healthy.  Besides, don’t you know that, for most people, one nostril is always plugged, up even when they are healthy? They just don’t notice it.” Continue reading
