Maybe you’ve heard of the Hippocratic Oath? Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, is believed to have written the oath, over 2300 years ago.  The original oath has many statements that are ignored, even contradicted by current medical practice. It begins, for example with the physician swearing by several gods: Apollo, a god of medicine and disease; Asclepius, the healing god; and his daughters: Hygieia, the goddess of health and cleanliness; and Panacaea, the goddess of universal remedy.

Today, few doctors, if any, believe in the exact wording of the original Hippocratic Oath.  Few doctors take this oath. It’s time to replace it. Continue reading →

Last weekend I attended the Parkland Conference where I listened to the keynote speaker, Alex Himelfarb, explain the three laws of Austerity:

1. Austerity is toxic.
2. Austerity limits our view of what is possible.
3. Austerity is not inevitable, it is the result of a theory. We created this theory. We can change it.

Then, later in his speech, while discussing the value of taxes, he offered, and attempted to refute, a quote he often hears from business leaders:

“I’m happy to pay taxes, as soon as we get rid of the waste in government.”

This quote, although Alex was not aware, arises from a fundamental misunderstanding about the health and healthiness of waste and inefficiencies. Continue reading →

There are many myths about cures.  But, the myths about cures are not about alternative medicines, not about forbidden medicines, not about snake oil salesmen.  Many myths about cures arise from cure simple ignorance.

There are two types of cure ignorance. Misunderstandings about the nature of cures  are commonplace.  In addition, we often fail to see a cure when it occurs.
