Does this surprise you? It’s a statement easily verified, even by a novice. Let’s look at some ways to test, and prove it.

First, walk over to you medicine cabinet. Take out each of the medicines. Read the label, look for the word ‘cure’. You might want to take to the internet, to look up the medicines in your cabinet – to search for the word cure. In most cabinets, you will not find a single medicine that claims to cure any illness. Isn’t Health just the Absence of Illness?

“Illness is just the absence of health.”.

Nope. It’s a common mistake, often repeated without much thought.

Is a donut the ‘absence of a hole’? Nope. A hole is the absence of a donut, but a donut is not the absence of a hole.

Chronic Healthiness

symptomsIllness starts with the symptoms. We notice the symptoms first. Something feels strange. Our bodies, our minds, our spirits – even our communities are always alert to possible danger. “Am I sick?“, we ask ourselves. Or is it normal? Life is complex. Are our feelings sensing danger? Or is everything A OK? We can only wait and see. Do they fade, or persist, or grow?

Our bodies are on constant alert to our internal status, and our mind is always monitoring our physical feelings. Are they symptoms of illness? Symptoms can be a sign of vibrant health. Continue reading
