Not all illnesses are accepted as such. In certain African tribes the prevalence of yaws—a contagious disease akin to leprosy—is so high that those who do not contract it are considered abnormal and viewed with suspicion. North Amazonian Indians who do not exhibit the disfiguring symptoms of endemic syphilis are thought to lack virility and find it hard to marry. Where the presence of disease is accepted by primitive tribes, the method of cure, as we have seen is usually a mixture of faith, magic, and medicine.
