Goldstein stressed the placebo effect as a means of conceptualizing “spontaneous remission,” as a prognostic device for predicting therapy outcome, and, very importantly, as an indicator of the quality of the therapist-patient relationship. It is also responsible for the “transference cure.” In light of all these comments, is there a way in which we can be assured that psychotherapeutic intervention is more than merely placebogenic?
